Matthew Schollard


Matthew Schollard, a retired USAF Pararescueman, is a cofounder of Beneath the Surface Foundation, lifelong waterman, and experienced yoga teacher. Upon retirement from the military, Matt committed to overcoming combat related Post Traumatic Stress, through a deep self-study and understanding of yoga, meditation, and breathing practices. Pairing these practices with Ocean Therapy, Matt continues to heal his wounds from war, and devotes his existence to sharing these modalities with combat veterans. Today, Matt shapes his teachings based off of his own healing experiences and delivers them to the military and veteran community.  

As the Board President of Beneath the Surface, Matt is incredibly passionate about veteran issues, especially Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury. He lives in Washougal, WA with his two boys, ages 11 and 13, and his fiancé Amanda.

Amanda Tomac


Amanda Tomac is CEO and co-founder of Beneath the Surface Foundation, in addition to managing her massage and yoga therapy business. She previously worked as an independent, small business consultant, supporting start-ups and internal restructures.

Amanda spent 4 years volunteering with university nonprofits and clubs, hosting community events, supporting local charities, and implementing on-campus, small business startups. She served as the VP of the Collegiate Entrepreneur Organization at Illinois State for two years, advancing her team to win multiple National Business Plan Awards, and holds a BA of Science in Entrepreneurial and Organizational Leadership Studies. She is a 900-hour Licensed Massage Therapist, a certified Holistic Health Coach, and a certified Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher.  

Amanda brings quality driven leadership skills along with a uniquely progressive and forward-thinking management style. Her skill sets range from an interpersonal logistician and intuitive bodyworker, to a philanthropic water-woman. She is a devoted veteran wellness advocate and dedicated to giving back to those she believes need the most support and healing.

China Kirk

China Kirk serves as Chief Operating Officer for United States Tennis Association PNW, national governing body of the sport of tennis.  At this 501c3 nonprofit, China leads business operations and mission expansion with a dynamic team of 70 year-round employees, 500+ seasonal staff, and hundreds of volunteers throughout WA, OR, AK, and ID.  Prior roles include on-site partnership rollout on US Military bases domestic and abroad, and working with former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative to help get youth healthy and moving through sport.

 Her love of the ocean and respect for combat veterans stems from growing up helping run the family fishing business as well as a military family; father served as a Marine in Vietnam and grandfather in WWII. She believes that BtS can not only help heal wounds for veterans, but provide the tools and experiences to re-connect families. 

She enjoys surfing, kiteboarding, snowboarding, backpacking and adventuring year-round with her husband and goldendoodle.



Taylor Aldridge


Taylor Aldridge is a Physician Assistant of 7 years currently working in GI Surgical Oncology at Stanford University Hospital. She has a keen interest in academic pursuits and community education. Taylor is the founder and an executive board member of Illinois Endoscopy Society, a non-profit organization, focused on educating healthcare providers and community members about the field of Interventional Gastroenterology. Taylor cares deeply about giving back to the community and strives to provide a better quality of life for those who defend ours.
